Councillor Montgomery meets local soldiers returned from Afghanistan

A former Midlothian Provost has written to the First Minister asking what will happen to the Penicuik-based Royal Highland Fusiliers in the event of a Yes vote.

Councillor Adam Montgomery (Lab) says the men and women of 2SCOTS do not know what will happen in an independent Scotland.

The Scottish Government said: “Scotland’s Future makes clear that the Scottish Government will protect all military bases inherited at the point of independence and that major army facilities will continue to be needed at Glencorse, along with other army bases around Scotland.”

Army Scotland said: “Contrary to statements made by Scottish Government Ministers, an independent Scotland could not simply co-opt existing units that are primarily recruited in Scotland or based in Scotland, as these are integral parts of the UK Armed Forces.”
