The Queen’s grandfather King George V was on the throne and Herbert Asquith was the Liberal Prime Minister when Mary Fraser was born.

Last week the woman, who has lived through two World Wars, celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by five generations of her family.

A sprightly Mary Fraser was born in Crosshill, Fife, on December 13, 1913. She was the second youngest of nine brothers and sisters.

She left school in Fife at 14. “There was nothing else for it - I was sent to Edinburgh.”
