Midlothian’s very own happy hero – Mary MacFarlane, from Woodburn – has been given an award for making other people smile.

The activities co-ordinator at Archview Lodge Care Home in Dalkeith was nominated for a Smile Award through a campaign run in the Advertiser.

And on November 2, Scotland’s Happiness Day, she travelled to Glasgow as one of 13 recipients, walking away with the award for Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Since discovering that she had won an award following her nomination in the Advertiser, Mary has been enjoying the attention.

She joked: “I’m like a film star just now!

“I come through the door at work and they want a picture taken with me, no autographs yet though.”

She added: “I just want to thank the Advertiser for doing this, it was lovely.”

Mary also revealed that the 60-strong One Voice Choir she put together, comprising clients from across nine county care homes, will be carol singing at Jarnac Court Care Home on December 13.
