A mural artist is becoming a familiar face around Mayfield and Easthouses as he works with the local community on their Big Wall.

Artist Chris Rutterford has been commissioned to help provide a new centrepiece for the area in the form of a 60 metre long Big Wall mural, due to be hung on the wall between the Shell garage and the medical centre in October.

The mural will be themed around the gala day and aims to feature aspects from all parts of Mayfield and Easthouses past, present and future under that subject.

While working on the mural, Chris has become a regular visitor to Mayfield, St Lukes and Lawfield Primary Schools as well as Newbattle High School, and he has been consulting as much as possible with the children throughout the community.

He said: “At this stage it is not about the end product for them but some of the work they’ve made is great, it would put many artists I know to shame.

“They have all really got stuck in and engaged with the process and are having a great time.”

As well as the children, Chris will also be working with Y2K, special needs groups and other local bodies in a bid to get everyone involved.
