Mayfield and Easthouses Gala Day will celebrate its 25th anniversary next weekend with a special bumper event planned.

Jesse Rae, the singer who opened the original event back in 1989, will repeat the honours this year.

The gala day committee’s Robert Hogg (55) believes it is an important event for local people: “It was started by local businesses and shopkeepers, led by Brian Tannerhill from McSence. And it’s continued ever since. I got involved after that first year.

“I enjoy it. I joined to give something back to my children, now my grandchildren go. It’s great to see the children enjoy it.

“And I think it’s important for the local community to have a gala day.

“It’s the highlight of the year in the community. There is a lot of work and hassle involved but it’s worth it.

“The community has always supported it. And we have had some fantastic days. We always get big crowds for the parade.”

Mayfield and Easthouses Gala Day, June 7, the parade will leave Easthouses Miner’s Club at 1pm and arrive at the gala day event in Mayfield Public Park at around 1.45pm.
