Three teenage girls from Mayfield were left traumatised when a dog attacked the horses they were riding near Gorebridge.

Lauren Richardson (14) was riding with pals Ruth (14) and Eilish (12) Johnston at Gore Glen when the black Staffordshire bull terrier launched itself at her horse Duchess and began biting the animal’s legs.

Lauren managed to stay in the saddle as the frightened horse threatened to rear up. The dog then attacked a second horse by latching on to its tail.

When one of the horses kicked the dog in the face, its owners subjected the three “terrified” girls to a tirade of abuse and refused to let them leave the area.

One of the female dog owners then began filming the teenagers, who were in tears by this time, on her mobile phone.

Lauren said: “We were out on our horses at Gore Glen near the river when we saw three women who had three dogs on their leads.

“But there was a black Staffie in the water and when it saw us it just came running straight for us.”
