The opening times for the Recycling Centres in Midlothian will change on May 5.
From that date, the two centres at Stobhill and Penicuik will open from 9.30am to 4.15pm all year round.
The current opening hours are 10am until 6pm seven days a week in summer (until the end of September) and 10am to 4pm from October until the end of March.
Cabinet member with responsibility for recycling, Councillor Derek Rosie (SNP), said: “We’re changing the opening times following a review and as part of the council’s budget reduction measures, which will mean longer winter opening but slightly shorter summer opening times.
“The earlier opening time reflects anecdotal evidence that this would be desirable for users.
What do you think about the change?
“The change will save £15,000, which may not sound like a huge amount but if you consider it is currently costing Midlothian council tax payers and businesses £200,000 a month to send rubbish to landfill, we feel every penny counts at a time of budget constraints.
“Small changes can make a big impact. For example, we looked at contents of some grey bins recently in Newtongrange and Mayfield and found 90% of them contained materials that could easily be recycled at the kerbside such as cans and plastics.
“Even if each household could save one less grey bin going to landfill a year, it would save Midlothian thousands of pounds annually that could be spent on essential services such as schools and affordable housing.”
