A vote to cut Midlothian Council’s grants to local groups went down to the wire when it was debated by councillors.
Council officers recommended cutting £500,000 off the £1.5 million fund within four years.
When it came before councillors, Derek Milligan (Lab) said: “We oppose this, which is quite frankly, taking a third off the voluntary sector.”
Council leader Owen Thompson (SNP) said: “We need to be clear, it’s not a cut of a third in the total.
“There is another £3.6 million available.”
A vote on the recommendations resulted in a tie, with Provost Joe Wallace’s (SNP) casting vote giving the go ahead.
