Midlothian MP David Hamilton has explained why he voted to introduce a cap on overall welfare spending.
Labour MPs have received criticism for backing the government measure.
Midlothian North MSP Colin Beattie (SNP) has written to Mr Hamilton questioning his stance and Midlothian South MSP Christine Grahame (SNP) claimed the cap would place more vulnerable people in poverty: “This cap is just a crude, blunt instrument.”
Mr Hamilton explained: “The benefits cap referred to in the Bill was a cap on the overall spending on benefits across the UK.
“What the Bill does is recognise that welfare spending must be controlled like any other government budget.”
