When a politician puts their weight behind an issue or campaign it can often prove the difference between success and failure.
In the case of Midlothian MSP Colin Beattie (SNP), that weight has diminished considerably in the past six weeks.
His impressive weight loss – from 92 to 76 kilos – has been part of an effort to combat the long term effects of type 2 diabetes.
The disease, which occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, can lead to blindness and organ failure.
However, as Colin discovered while researching his condition online, boffins at the University of Newcastle have come up with a diet that reverses the symptoms.
