Midlothian pupils to tuck into Burns

Pupils across Midlothian Primary Schools will be raising their forks in honour of the Bard next Wednesday (January 22) when they tuck into a Burns supper of haggis, neeps and tatties.

The tasty Scottish delicacy will be on the menu at every primary in the county as part of the celebration of Scotland’s most famous poet.

Councillor Bob Constable, cabinet member for education, said: “With one of my personal favourites on the menu, it’s no wonder Midlothian Council has the highest uptake of school meals for primary and secondary school pupils’ in mainland Scotland.

“Our excellent catering staff members are always coming up with new recipes and themed days to make sure school meals are not just appetising and nutritious but they also encourage our young people to try new foods.

“So if any of the pupils have yet to try the haggis, available in both vegetarian and the usual meaty option, I’d encourage them to have a taste. It is delicious.”

Two pupils who might just be in the queue next Wednesday are Bailli and Dominic, who are both in P7 at King’s Park in Dalkeith.

Bailli said: “I kind of like haggis. I’ve had it in school once before.”

A Scottish Government report, published in June 2013 confirmed Midlothian is now top of the league for the uptake of both paid-for and free school meals.

Most of the council’s school meals are homemade and prepared on-site using food from local suppliers.

Bailli said she could be tempted for a second helping on the day but Dominic wasn’t so sure. Haggis doesn’t appeal much but he does love the homemade flapjacks. “Now they are amazing,” he said.
