This silk banner was the property of the Midlothian Brotherly Society which was founded in 1798 to provide death benefits and insurance against unemployment caused by ill health.

The banner is embroidered with coloured silk threads and bears the motto ‘Mid Lothian brotherly society constituted in the year 1798’.

This society was founded in a period of growing instability and provided a measure of mutual welfare support when no other support existed. Some friendly societies also acted as social clubs and organisations and included the Free Gardeners, Oddfellows and Shepherds Friendly Society.
