A Newbattle husband and wife have pledged to complete a series of monthly fundraising challenges as part of their 30th birthday celebrations.

Sean and Emma Paliczka are hoping to raise more than £3,000 for local cancer sufferers by April, when their campaign will culminate with a ceilidh in Edinburgh.

Emma, who works for the National Trust for Scotland, married self-employed roofer Sean in 2010.

She told the Advertiser: “We wanted to mark our 30th birthday milestones with a new challenge and had the idea that we could help others in the process.

“We set about looking for a charity that we could support and were impressed by the work of the Maggie’s Centre which is in the grounds of the Western General Hospital.

Daredevil Sean has also completed a 10,000ft skydive. Having recently ended a five-year spell at Bonnyrigg Rose, when he signed for Gala Fairydean Rovers, he is also hoping to organise a charity football match.

Over the coming months the Palicka’s will be aiming to complete the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow and also ‘bag’ a Munro.

Sean said: “We have been delighted by the support we have received so far and hope to raise even more funds for Maggie’s.”
