Midlothian’s newest housing development for the elderly has been shortlisted for an award.

Cowan Court, Midlothian Council extra care housing complex in Penicuik, is up for a prize in the Scottish Home Awards 2014.

The development, which opened last September, has been shortlisted as a finalist for ‘Senior Living Development of the Year’. The winner will be announced in June.

The building was constructed in such a way as to promote independent living by residents. It was also designed in a dementia-friendly layout.

Judges were impressed with the 32 self-contained flats, which are 28 one bedroom and two two-bedroom flats at the housing complex.

Other highlights included the development’s energy saving benefits, and the communal hub facilities which include a cafe and hairdresser for use by the whole community.
