Sir Geoffrey Palmer celebrates his knighthood

Midlothian freeman Geoff Palmer has received hundreds of goodwill messages after being awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours.

Sir Geoffrey, Professor Emeritus in the School of Life Science at Heriot-Watt University, is a prominent anti-racism campaigner and internationally-renowned brewing expert.

Receiving the honour for services to human rights, science and charity, Sir Geoffrey told the Advertiser: “There are many factors. You have got some ability and you do some hard work but at the end of the day, it is [thanks to] the people who worked with me and my mother, who put up with me and looked after me. She would have been over the moon.”

Sir Geoffrey, who has lived in Penicuik since 1977, said he had been touched by the local response.
