Controversial plans for another hot food takeaway in Penicuik town centre have been granted by the Scottish Government on appeal.

Scotmid took its proposals for the vacant unit at 24 High Street to the Directorate for Planning and Environmental Appeals after a knockback from Midlothian Council.

The local authority refused to grant consent for the change of use for the former butcher’s shop on the grounds that another hot food takeaway would adversely affect the vitality and viability of this part of the High Street.

Penicuik and District Community Council also opposed the plans believing it best to hold out for a more suitable business.
