Scottish Water began a massive clean-up job this week after a blocked sewer caused a raw sewage spill through parts of Bonnyrigg.

On Monday morning (March 3), local residents were fuming that, despite reporting the issue last Friday, the hazardous problem had still not been solved.

One mother of two, who did not wish to be named, said that children had been spotted playing amongst debris which included used condoms and sanitary towels.

Minutes after taking photographic evidence of the revolting discharge, she hit out: “This sewage has been flowing along a path that is often used by schoolchildren – it’s an absolute disgrace.

“Scottish Water were out on Friday to lay down sandbags but the sewage is everywhere. The [Dalkeith to Penicuik] Walkway off Campview Road, Auld Coal Avenue, Auld Coal Path and Auld Coal Grove have all been affected.”
