Despite local objections, councillors have given permission to open another ‘house in multiple occupation’ (HMO) in Gorebridge.

Bonnyrigg man Drew Wesley’s application for an HMO licence for 10 Juner Place, Gorebridge, was approved by the general purposes committee, making it the sixth HMO in Gorebridge.

Responding to fears about the HMO occupants, Mr Wesley added: “It’s up to me to make sure I choose the right people. But, because there are so many people needing to live in an HMO, I can be choosy. I envisage mostly middle-aged divorced men living there.”

One of the residents on the street, Graham Fletcher (42), was not happy that the HMO application had been approved.

He said: “I get on with the owner, he is a nice guy. But I don’t want this next door to me as it’s going to affect the value of my house.

“I’m not happy but I just have to accept it.”
