An author and Emmy award- winning film director from California has travelled to Midlothian to trace his family back more than 250 years.

Dave Banks (65) is here to look up his Midlothian ancestors James and Richard Banks, who lived in the county before moving to America in the 1750s.

He said: “I had heard about my Scottish links from my family, but it wasn’t until my grandson checked it out recently online that I knew it was true.

“So he gave me the information he found on James and Richard and I thought I will look into it while I’m here for the book festival and to do a bit of filming.

“There is something about what we inherit in our DNA. I have been a risk taker all my life, I covered the war in Afghanistan. And I just want to know more about the family and where I come from.”
