Hopes of adding names to Newtongrange War Memorial in time for Remembrance Sunday have been dashed.

Despite the community council’s efforts to do so by Easter this year, the plans are still in limbo.

After months of wrangling over which names to add to the memorial, the local group has been told to wait by Midlothian Council.

Speaking at the community council’s latest meeting, secretary Ron Campbell explained the current situation: “The names have been submitted and we are waiting to hear back.”

Midlothian Council said: “We’re aware that the community council is keen to have the names inscribed.“We need to make sure we’re considering all the relevant facts. A decision will be made by councillors just as soon as possible.”
