Local residents have made an impassioned plea to prevent a wedding licence being granted to a masonic lodge in Newtongrange.

But, despite this and a petition, last week’s General Purposes Committee meeting at Midlothian House granted Newbattle Lodge a licence to hold weddings at its hall on Newbattle Road.

Locals living around the corner on Galadale Crescent spoke of parking issues and noise disturbances when wedding receptions are held at the venue, which they fear will become worse if wedding parties are in attendance all day.

Speaking after the meeting, concerned local resident John May was glad that the conditions had been added: “I always knew it would be passed but I’m glad there are conditions and monitoring put in place.

“So it’s still on-going.But now we could be putting up with rowdiness all day.

“I have had people urinating on my door in the past after a wedding reception there.”

In response to other complaints Mr Reid said: “There are plenty of toilets in the club and they are well used. We have got no control over what people do outside the building.

“As for people making noise at night on that road, it’s a public road, people could be coming from anywhere.”
