It was D-Day for groups in Mayfield and Easthouses recently when more than 400 local residents cast their vote on who should receive funding from the Community Chest.

The chest is a project funded jointly by Midlothian Council and the Scottish Government to the tune of £30,000.

The groups had previously submitted funding applications and at an event held in Mayfield Church Hall, local residents decided which groups would get the money.

Almost all of the 31 groups, who had applied for funding, attended at the Decision Day event, providing information about their projects.

In total, 349 people cast three votes each, choosing their first, second and third choices. In all, 17 groups were successful.

The cheques were presented to the successful groups at the recent gala day, a fitting end to the first part of the project.

Representatives of the 17 groups were delighted to be able to go up on stage to collect their cheques to the cheers and applause from the people gathered.

If you would like more details about the project, view the Mayfield and Easthouses Community Chest Facebook page or contact communities officer Paul Johnson on 0131 270 5675.
