Dalkeith homeowners are in “utter shock” after being hit with bills for landscape and ground maintenance at Wester Cowden.

Residents billed by Scottish Woodlands – a management company acting on behalf of housebuilders, say the demand for an annual £172.80 has come out of the blue.

Fran McPhillips, of Miners Walk, said: “There are 850 houses being hit with these charges. They want the money either by the end of the month or say we can set up a standing order. We are in utter in shock. It’s a month before Christmas and there are a lot of people who don’t have money.”

Scottish Woodlands say the charges, for works including grass cutting; removal of litter; tree, shrub and hedge maintenance; the upkeep of a play area and the inspection of ‘public realm’ items such as benches and fences, were written into the homeowners’ Title Deeds.
