Police have charged a man for wasting police time.

A 43-year-old had contacted officers on Tuesday, April 5, to report that two males had attempted to rob him at knifepoint near to Woodburn Avenue in Dalkeith.

The incident had apparently occurred moments after he left a Post Office within a nearby Spar store.

However, inquiries have identified alleged inconsistencies in his version of events.

He will now be reported to the Procurator Fiscal and is expected to appear in court in due course.

DC John Fortune of Dalkeith CID, said: “We take all reports of robbery seriously and local officers had carried out a significant amount work investigating this particular claim.

“However and after further inquiries it would appear that police resources were diverted from genuine calls as they looked into this report.

“Although we will always investigate reports of criminality we will also robustly pursue anyone who wastes police time.”
