Depute Lord Lieutenant Sarah Barron and Provost Joe Wallace congratulated Nellie Paxton on her 105th birthday recently. Born in Leith in 1910, Nellie is one of eight children. After the First World War, the family moved to Newtongrange where her dad got a job down the pit.
She was happily married to Dave for 50 years and they had two sons, David and Alan. Nellie worked in Liberton Hospital as a ward maid. During the Second World War she worked in the Bevan Huts serving food to the local men. A member of Newtongrange Church, she loved dancing and was still going to local dancing clubs into her 80s. Nellie now lives in Springfield Bank nursing home, Bonnyrigg.
