Newly-appointed acting head teacher at St Matthew’s Primary School in Rosewell, Mara Matthews, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

After graduating from Craiglockhart Catholic Teachers Training College, she taught in Ayrshire for two years before moving to Sweden to teach English at Stockholm University.

Mara then headed for Dubai, where she spent four years in multi-cultural schools using the English curriculum. Returning to Edinburgh, marrying and giving birth to her son, she then headed to Oman to work for His Majesty’s Royal Flight School, where she became deputy head of a primary school and would spend a further 13 years there. Returning to Scotland 12 years ago, she worked in Denny, Newtongrange and latterly, St Andrew’s Primary in Gorebridge.

Mrs Matthews said: “I intend to work closely with the parents and agencies to ensure that our children attain and maintain high standards and are ready to meet the needs of the high school of their choice.”
