A Midlothian boatman has been praised for rushing to save the life of a kayaker who capsized off the coast at Dunbar recently.
Brian Ball, from Mayfield, had just started fishing in a bay near Torness when he was alerted to the emergency.
The 58-year-old said: “I heard a call on the radio, which came from a ship that was further out and it was obvious it couldn’t reach the kayaker, so I just fired up the coast as quick as I could.
“The coastguard told me to head for Dunbar because someone had been seen getting into difficulty.
“I just did what everybody else would do in the circumstances and I’m a wee bit surprised at the reaction.”
The alarm had been raised around 10.45am on October 20 when people saw the kayaker struggling just off Skateraw Old Harbour.
Mr Ball had been enjoying a pleasant morning fishing for cod and pollack in his 15ft boat, Dignity, a craft he uses regularly for pleasure trips off the East Lothian coast.
