STUDENTS from the Centre for Health and Wellbeing at Jewel & Esk College have returned from Bulgaria after volunteering in a children’s home.
The two-week trip saw 10 social care students and two members of staff make the 1600-mile journey to the orphanage to help renovate the building and also work with the children.
The orphanage, located near Sofia, cares for around 50 children, the majority of whom have suffered some form of abandonment or neglect and don’t have relatives who can care for them.
Lisa Kierzkowski (27), from Dalkeith, explained: “I knew the trip would be hard, but I had no idea how attached I would get to the children in just two weeks. It was a life-changing experience for me and made me realise all of the people I have in my life that I take for granted.”
