Midlothian Council to consider open cast mine plan

Controversial plans for an open cast coalmine at Cauldhall Moor are to be considered by Midlothian Council’s planning committee in November.

Hargreaves Surface Mining Limited intends to extract 10 million tonnes of coal from the site between Penicuik and Rosewell.

It acquired the interests at Cauldhall Moor after of Scottish Coal went into liquidation in August.

A planning application is scheduled to be reported to the council’s planning committee for determination on November 19.

However a pre-determination hearing must first take place at Penicuik Town Hall on Thursday, November 7.

The hearing will constitute a meeting of the planning committee and will start at 10am.
