Councillor Peter Boyes (Ind) has handed in his resignation on the grounds of ill health.
Mr Boyes, who in August last year quit the Labour party after 43 years, served the Midlothian East ward.
In a letter to Midlothian Council Chief Executive Kenneth Lawrie, he explained: “Whilst I have enjoyed my time as a councillor I feel it is now in the best interests of my constituents, myself and my dear family that I relinquish this role.”
His resignation is expected to be announced a meeting of the Full Council tomorrow.
