Midlothian councillors to go on camera

A MOVE to broadcast council meetings over the internet appears to have won cross-party support in Midlothian.

Green councillor Ian Baxter (pictured) intends to table a motion at a meeting of the full council on September 25.

If his proposal is approved, cameras will be able to capture disputes between elected members and votes within the council chambers, with footage stored online serving as a permanent record of them.

Councillor Baxter said: “Council meetings are held during the day at times which many people find inconvenient or find it difficult to travel to council headquarters. Also, minutes only record the decisions and none of the debate.

“With the council’s new and modernised website now in place, it shouldn’t be too difficult to include webcasted live and recorded debates, as well as audio podcasts for those who want to catch up while on the move.”
