Prominent anti-racism campaigner and internationally renowned brewing expert Professor Geoff Palmer has been admitted as an honorary Freeman of Midlothian.

At a special ceremony in the Midlothian Council chambers, Prof Palmer said he accepted the award with “great honour and humility”.

He added the honour was for everyone, who helped him carry out his community and scientific work.

The Heriot-Watt University professor, Professor Emeritus in the School of Life Sciences, is president of the Edinburgh and Lothians Racial Equality Council, chairman of NHS Lothians’ equality forum and on the board of Hanover Housing and Penicuik CAB. He was awarded an OBE in 2003.

He said: “My family and I have lived in Midlothian since 1977. It is a privilege to live in possibly the most naturally beautiful and caring part of Scotland.”
