A Midlothian hotel has been named the Sir Chris Hoy of accommodation for cyclists.

Melville Castle Hotel, near Dalkeith, is celebrating becoming the only hotel in the county to receive a Cyclist’s Welcome award.

Judged by leading cyclists, the award rewards the hotel’s expertise in meeting the needs of bike-users and recognises hotels and visitor attractions that engage in cyclist friendly practices, making it easier for cyclists to find and book an appropriate stay.

The hotel is situated on many of the main cycle routes in the area and offers cyclists safe and secure bike storage, packed lunches and a good night’s sleep.

Qualifying properties are marked with a badge on their VisitScotland page giving them a seal of approval that cyclists visiting the region can instantly recognise.

David Hay, owner and director of Melville Castle Hotel, said: “The stunning countryside and wide range of cycling routes around Midlothian make this region popular among cyclists, and we want to offer the best possible facilities to bike fans who want to explore the local area.

“If a cyclist sees Melville Castle Hotel is a member of the Cyclists Welcome Scheme, they know that they will have access to a range of facilities and information that will make their stay all the more memorable.

“We have seen more and more cyclists looking for specific facilities, such as bike storage and special diets which we cater for, as well as the early starts.”

Riddell Graham, Director of Partnerships at VisitScotland, said: “We are delighted to have Melville Castle in the Cyclists Welcome Scheme which reflects their commitment to accommodate visitors who wish to explore our beautiful landscape on two wheels.

“Cycling tourism is big business in Scotland and presents a huge opportunity for hotels, restaurants and accommodation providers to capitalise on this year-round leisure pursuit.

“VisitScotland is doing its part to ensure cyclists have access to the best quality facilities through the Cyclists Welcome Scheme and it is fantastic that visitors can get on their bike in Midlothian knowing that the stunning and historic Melville Castle will be able to accommodate their needs.”
