SNP MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, Colin Beattie, has warned his constituents not to fall foul of a European wide-scam that charges for the inclusion into ‘The European Medical Directory’.
The scam offers inclusion into the directory, claiming it will help people locate their correct doctor. However, hidden in the small print are costs which many people will pay in order to avoid threats of legal action.
Awareness of the scam began after a local constituent raised the issue with Mr Beattie, who then raised it with SNP MEP Alyn Smith.
Mr Smith later addressed the issue with the European Commission, confirming that the scheme is in violation of a 2006 Directive on misleading and comparative advertising.
Commenting, Mr Beattie said: “It is disgraceful and shocking that these scammers target our greatest concern which is our health, as a way to make money. I urge all constituents to be on alert of this medical scam circulating around Europe. We need to make more people aware of this scam.”
