It’s not often that young and old people work together – but an innovative project delivered by Volunteer Centre Midlothian is doing just that.
The Supported Befriending Project offers group activity sessions for older people, and these are delivered by the young volunteers.
The hope is that there will be a breakdown of the common misconceptions older people have of youths, and also encourage a mutual respect between young and old in the community.
Alec, a tenant at Salisbury View sheltered housing in Mayfield, said: “It’s great when the young volunteers come in. They are a boost to the sheltered housing, they brighten the place up and it has surprised me that they want to come in and help out”.
