Dalkeith Museum's new artefact is a large embroidered signature cloth

This embroidered signatured cloth was donated to Dalkeith History Society by Mrs Hoad of Parkside Place, having purchased it in a charity shop for £2.50.

The cloth was created as a fundraising initiative during the First World War to raise funds for the war effort by the local Red Cross branch. It is said that individuals paid to have their signatures embroidered on the cloth.

The names are being individually recorded by the society so that they can be archived in the hope that many of them can be identified by descendants later on. The cloth will go on display in the new museum facilities, which are due to open later this year in Dalkeith Corn Exchange.

We’d love to feature your Midlothian object.
