A former Newbattle High School pupil will assist the new Lord Lieutenant for Midlothian at public ceremonies and events for the next year.

Cadet Warrant Officer Daniel Dempster (19) was appointed ‘Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Midlothian’ at a recent ceremony in Newtongrange, becoming Sir Robert Clerk’s first cadet appointment since he became Lord Lieutenant for Midlothian earlier this year.

Speaking at the ceremony Daniel’s commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Steven Ross-Bell congratulated the cadet and spoke of his pride at the appointment, he said: “Tonight, we saw one of our own being appointed as Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for Midlothian.

“Cadet Warrant Officer Daniel Dempster embodies all that there is in being a member of the air cadets.

“His appointment was witnessed by friends and family as well as squadron leader Alastair Ross of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve representing Southeast Scotland Wing.

“I am proud to be the Commanding Officer of 1739 Newtongrange Squadron and to witness the cadets achieving all that they can be. Well done Daniel.”
