Controversial plans to reduce cleaning of the five public toilets in Midlothian got the go-ahead last week, amid fears that it will lead to closures.

From January 1 next year two attendants will work in shifts to clean the toilets in Dalkeith, Bonnyrigg, Loanhead, Penicuik and Gorebridge.

Four members of council staff currently attend to them. Leader of the Midlothian Labour group Coucnillor Derek Milligan said: “You are going to close toilets as people are going to stop using them if they are not monitored right.”

SNP councillor Owen Thompson responded: “It’s clearly workable and we have discussed this enough, it’s time to move on.”
