Volunteer Centre Midlothian is celebrating a £38,284 award from the Big Lottery Fund.

The Young Start grant will be used to expand and develop a current Transform Project.

Transform is a supported volunteering scheme where small groups of young people are recruited and trained to volunteer together, with constant support and supervision from the project worker.

It began in 2009 with groups of young volunteers helping to deliver social activities and befriending for older people.
It then developed and expanded to include a gardening volunteering activity.

Youth services manager Karen Downie said: “The Young Start grant will enable Transform to develop the befriending aspect, with the addition of young volunteers delivering activities for children.

“This will be undertaken mainly within primary schools where the volunteers will introduce new lunchtime games and activities for the children.”
