Housing and Welfare Minister Margaret Burgess MSP visited the community Storehouse project in Penicuik town centre last week.

The Penicuik Community Alliance initiative recently received £150,000 from the Scottish Government’s Community Town Centre Capital Fund.

The Alliance is now working to raise £40,000 by the end of March and has launched a community share scheme.

The aim is that the Storehouse, on the High Street, will house a community bakery, cafe and food shop.

Alliance convenor Roger Kelly said: “We’re delighted Margaret Burgess chose to come and see Penicuik Storehouse.

“It’s a key example of a community-led town centre project which is set to benefit from Scottish Government funding. In the week of the Minister’s visit, local investment in the project has shot up from 40 per cent to 51 per cent of our target amount.

“It really is a landmark community venture in the old co-op spirit.”
