The MP for Midlothian has promised to help avoid any major service changes at a Gorebridge post office set to be “modernised” next year.
Rumours circulated online that plans were afoot to close Arniston Post Office, which is situated in the Scotmid store on Hunterfield Road, and replace it with a limited post office service operating from the tills instead.
The Post Office told The Advertiser it is proposing to “modernise” the Gorebridge branch next year, with further details to be announced closer to the time.
Owen Thompson (SNP), MP for Midlothian said: “The loss of a post office is always a concern for a community and I will continue to work with local community groups to ensure there is no loss or impact to services.
“Gorebridge is an expanding community and it is important that the services and facilities reflect this.”
A spokesman for the Post Office said: “We are proposing to modernise Hunterfield Post Office as part of a programme of investment and transformation taking place across the Post Office network, helping to make our branches more modern and convenient for customers, and for the operators who run them. We’re talking to Scotmid Co-op about changing to one of our new-style local branches, in 2017. An announcement will be made nearer the time.”
