Midlothian MP David Hamilton has admitted that his comment about First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was “inappropriate”.
Calling her a “wee lassie with a tin helmet on” during his speech at the Scottish Labour conference, the MP came in for strong criticism.
Mr Hamilton told the Advertiser: “I realised as soon as I said it that I shouldn’t have. That said, I cannot understand why anyone other than the First Minister would be offended.”
Accused of sexism, Mr Hamilton said he has received numerous complaints about what he said and called for a “sense of perspective”.
He continued: “I speak without notes and speak from the heart and with passion and the last thing I want to do is to be remembered for a few off the cuff remarks out of nearly 45 years of representing people as a Socialist.”
