St David’s Primary’s efforts to improve the local environment have led to the Dalkeith school becoming the first in Midlothian to win a John Muir Award.
John Muir’s life and work has inspired people all over the world.
Born in Dunbar in 1838, he emigrated with his parents to the United States where he campaigned for the preservation of natural environments through his work as an environmentalist, geologist and botanist.
The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.
Four challenges are at the heart of each John Muir Award – discover, explore, conserve and share.
The Dalkeith school focused on the immediate environment and local community, with each class taking responsibility for identifying an area, planning their improvements through exploring the area and how it could be used better and then improving and managing the environment – the focus being for people as well as encouraging wildlife back into certain polluted or run-down areas.
