An innovative project to encourage Midlothian parents to read bedtime stories to their children has won a national award.

The Big Bedtime Read won silver in the Tackling Inequalities and Improving Health category of the COSLA Excellence Awards.

Councillor Bob Constable (SNP) said: “The Big Bedtime Read is a truly inspiring scheme and its win is well-deserved. For example, in just one of our schools taking part, parents have read 150 books to their children in the past year.

“Results include improved children’s speech and language, established bedtime routines, better concentration and behaviour and improved attachment and bonding between parent and child.”
