Midlothian MP Owen Thompson officially opened Scallywags, the new children’s nursery in Loanhead.

Situated in the former Ex-Servicemen’s Club building on Academy Lane, the nursery offers 50 places.

Scallywags has created 16 jobs and provides childcare facilities within the Loanhead area and wider afield.

The nursery will be holding an open day on October 8 from 2-4pm.

Scallywags was established in 2002 by Rhona Farren, a former paediatric nurse and qualified childcare practitioner. Since then Scallywags has been operating successfully in Longstone, Edinburgh. In 2015, Rhona’s husband, Robert, joined the team as joint company director. Robert has many years’ experience as a construction site manager so welcomed the challenge of renovating the Ex-Servicemen’s building in Loanhead.

Robert said: “We follow the pre-birth to three framework, supporting the planning and delivery of learning opportunities for our youngest learners. Staff follow the Curriculum for Excellence for our children three years and over, whereby the eight curricular areas are incorporated into the children’s learning through various fun activities.”
