The Newtongrange group which offered to work with police to tackle a perceived rise in local crime has welcomed the progress made.

The local community council discussed the issue last week at their latest meeting, two months after Chief Inspector Kenny Simpson and Inspector Michelle Ritchie accepted the group’s offer to work together to dispel local fears with talk on social media of setting up a vigilante group to police the streets.

Newtongrange Community Council secretary Ron Campbell believes that local confidence in the police has grown recently.

He said: “I think people are a wee bit more reassured now. For months and months we never saw any officers walking on the streets but after Kenny Simpson and Michelle Ritchie came to our meeting we suddenly saw officers out and about, and that has given people some confidence.”
