Newtongrange Star got back to winning ways with an important 2-0 victory over an enthusiastic Carnoustie side on Saturday at New Victoria Park.
After good early pressure Star eventually opened the scoring after 21 minutes. Renton did well to hold up play in the middle of the park before slipping in Coultress. Despite the visitors claims for offside he fired in an inch perfect cross which was met by Wilson sliding in knocking the ball goal wards. Despite getting a touch on the ball keeper Cormack was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line.
Quick thinking by Currie after 26 minutes saw him quickly play a free kick to Coultress while the Carnoustie players were still arguing. His effort was blocked for a corner which was cleared out to Jono McManus who drilled the ball back across the face of the goal where Renton stole in at the back post to knock the ball home to put Nitten 2-0 up.
The visitors should have pulled a goal back after 34 minutes when a terrific cross by Scott was headed over by Black from inside the six yard box when it looked easier to score. A slick passing move after 72 minutes from Carnoustie created another chance. Gray nutmegged Currie in midfield before releasing the rampaging Scott but his cross was pushed inches wide by Gersock.
Star introduced Motion for Coultress after 75 minutes allowing the new signing on loan from Berwick Rangers Coultress to take his applause from the home support. Star created a chance themselves through crisp passing after 82 minutes and a cross from Motion was headed back across goal by Renton to McManus who laid the ball off to Wilson. Unfortunately the ball appeared to take a bobble as his effort ended in the car park.
