A paperboy has described the moment he realised he would need his first aid skills to save the life of a pensioner who had collapsed at a bus stop.

Gareth Fleming (15) told the Advertiser this week how he had just finished his paper round when he saw an elderly man lying on the pavement in Main Street, Newtongrange, on Wednesday, April 4.

The Newbattle Community High School pupil said: “I was cycling home when it was pretty snowy.

“I saw a man was on the ground and a couple of people crowded around him. I went over and, at first, I was just in shock. I didn’t know what to do. He wasn’t breathing and I thought he’d had a heart attack.”

Luckily, Gareth was able to calm down and recall the resuscitation techniques he had learned as a volunteer lifeguard at Newbattle Swimming Pool, just metres from the scene of the drama.
