Joan Slight has been honoured with an MBE for her services to history in Scotland and voluntary service through the Girls’ Brigade.
The 65-year-old, of Ross Place in Newtongrange, said: “I’m delighted and just so happy to receive the award. However, I was just doing my job and other things that I like.”
Based in Edinburgh, Joan worked as a services manager from 1994 until retiring in March of last year.
She joined Newtongrange Girl Guides at the age of five and climbed the ranks to officer level.
Now with almost 60 years experience, she is still heavily involved, meeting with the group once a week at Newtongrange Parish Church and organising regular trips and activities.
