Newbattle Road in Newtongrange has re-opened to traffic after a two week closure while engineers worked to repair a broken gas mains.
The road had been closed since January 6 as a result of a high pressure gas main being damaged by a contractor working on one of SGN’s sites.
Claire Buchanan, a spokeswoman for gas distribution network company SGN, said: “Our repair was completed during the weekend before last (January 15/16).
“Our teams then needed to remove equipment and carry out some reinstatement work, and Newbattle Road was reopened on Friday afternoon, (January 22).
“We are carrying out some further work at our site to restore the area where we were working back to its original state. We would like to thank road users and local residents for their patience while we completed our repair.”
A road closure was in place between the roundabouts at Newbattle Gardens and Bryans Road and a signed diversion route was in place.
The damaged mains had led to a strong smell of gas in the Newbattle area and concerns about local public health. These fears however were allayed by SGN who said there was no risk to the public.
